On Sunday, October 5th, we took a one-day trip to a traditional house in the Makino Highlands to make smoked foods and stone-baked pizza!
Although it was drizzling that day, more than 20 people still gathered and joined us♪
Even the chestnut tiger butterflies were taking shelter from the rain. They were probably resting in the middle of their journey.
About the Chestnut Tiger Butterfly (Asagimadara)
The Asagimadara, known in English as the chestnut tiger butterfly, is a migratory species found in East Asia, including Japan, China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia.
It is well known for its long-distance seasonal migration — some individuals are documented to travel over 1,000 km, flying from Japan to Taiwan or the Philippines in autumn.
These butterflies have a distinctive appearance with pale bluish-white wings contrasted by dark brown or black veins, giving them a graceful and elegant look. During migration, they often stop to rest and feed on flowers with nectar or on plants containing pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which play a role in their chemical defense.
Because of their remarkable travel distance and beauty, the chestnut tiger butterfly is often considered a symbol of nature's mystery and resilience.
The crowd-favorite dog "Chachamaru" was there as always, and so were the ducks.
We relaxed in a traditional farmhouse that is over 150 years old.
Some people played Jenga, others enjoyed chatting, and some even explored the attic — there were plenty of ways to have fun.
We used a stone oven to bake pizzas.
First, we stretched out the dough and topped it with a variety of ingredients.
Once placed inside the stone oven, it took only about five minutes to bake to a nice golden finish.
Freshly baked pizza is simply the best!
We made smoked foods using the ingredients we had prepared in advance (^_^)
Bacon was the main item, but we also smoked marinated eggs and fish cakes.
Smoking them adds a deep, rich flavor and makes them incredibly delicious♪
In addition to the pizza and bacon, there were also dishes made with locally grown vegetables and fruits.
We also went to drink fresh spring water nearby.
It had a gentle, refreshing taste.
This old farmhouse has a calm, peaceful atmosphere where time seems to pass more slowly.
It gives you a glimpse of what life in old Japan might have been like.
By the time we headed home, the rain had stopped, and the mist combined with the setting sun created a magical, dreamlike scene.
